Girona city is the maximum representation of charm and medieval architecture. All the charm of this village is developed on the stream of the river Oñar and is a term that breathes Catalan authenticity from beginning to end. This makes it a must-see place to visit in Girona. Welcome to the medieval city of Catalonia!
This Willy’s plan is super special, especially for those who are in love with history. In this route from Pont Peixateries Velles to Jardins dels Alemanys we will visit Girona City. A city that has its origins in the Iberian settlements back in 77 BC and today is like taking a fascinating journey back in time.
Pont de les Peixateries Velles: few people know that the first documentation we find of this famous bridge dates from the late sixteenth century. And among all the works, reforms and maintenance works, there is the contribution of the company “Eiffel et Cie.” of Paris (builders of the famous Parisian tower), so it is a construction with a very special artistic and historical value for the community of Girona.
Girona Cathedral: a few minutes walk away, we find the famous Cathedral of Girona, dating from the eleventh century and surprises us with its incredible 23 meters high. It stands out because in 2016, numerous scenes of the renowned series “Game of Thrones” were filmed in this place and it is one of the places with the greatest medieval tradition of the town.
Jardins dels Alemanys: after getting caught up in a bit of history… we came to take a walk and relax among stone paths and nature. The “Jardins dels Alemanys”, is an area dating from the late seventeenth century and protects the remains of German soldiers stationed in Girona. This barracks was destroyed during the French war, marking a before and after in the history of this town.
Pont Peixateries Velles
The Pont Peixateries Velles is one of the most important of Girona, this may be due to the popularity of its builder Gustave Eiffel, if the same who was responsible for beautifying Paris, with the tower that bears his name. The curious thing is that this bridge was made a little before the famous Parisian tower, just in the year 1876 and for the locals it meant a great advance, since it communicates the new with the old city.
In addition, this small red iron bridge crosses the most representative charm of all Girona: the Oñar river. It crosses the most significant streets of the city and refers to the old fishmongers of the area. So if you are in this place, you can not resist to take a walk through the Pont Peixateries Velles, the most obliged visit in the city of Girona.
Girona Cathedral
The most imposing thing about the Cathedral of Girona is its height, so it is considered the highest point of the town. This beautiful cathedral was begun in the 11th century and it was only in the 18th century that it was really finished.
The Cathedral of Santa Maria, to which this construction refers, is a great contribution to Spanish architecture, since it preserves 3 characteristic styles in all its construction: Baroque, Romanesque and Gothic. The first one you will see on the main façade, the second one is clearly reflected in the cloister and the third one is right in the nave of this building. The interior of this church is splendid, highlighting the main altar with a silver and gilded altarpiece and a Romanesque marble cathedra. Undoubtedly an enclosure that brings together the best of the architecture and history of this town and that you can not miss for anything in the world.
Jardins dels Alemanys
Our 3rd and last place for this route in the city of Girona, are the Jardins dels Alemanys . Here we will finish the afternoon surrounded by nature and a little more history. Les Jardins dels Alemanys are the result of constant wars that faced this area of Catalonia, this former cemetery of German troops is today one of the most beautiful gardens in the region and certainly a major tourist attraction of this municipality.
Also within this historic center you can make very quiet tours and outdoor plans, also during the year there are concerts and events for the entertainment of residents and tourists. Undoubtedly a plan to do with family, friends or as a couple at any time of the year.
