Route details:
On this occasion, we escape to discover the wonders and secrets hidden in the forest of sculptures in Girona. A forest where Joan Carolà created different sculptures where he captured the different aspects of life in stone figures: we will find all types and colors.
Once we leave the forest behind, we continue along a dirt road that takes us to the top of Puig de Sant Miquel, where we find, no more and no less, than the castle of Sant Miquel: formerly known as “Puig de Castellar”, where we find the remains of the buildings. The location of the site is strategic: it visually dominates the valleys of Sant Daniel and Celrà, which open respectively to the plane of Girona and the Empordà plain. Until 1974, the place belonged to the municipality of Celrà, and later became part of the municipality of Girona together with Campdorà.
Once we have visited the castle with its beautiful hermitage, we will begin to return to the starting point, but this time we will do it by another path. In this second part of the route we will visit the Mines del Nen Jesús, a mine that keeps alive the mining history of the municipalities of Celrà and les Gavarres, being built and exploited during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. These are part of the Gavarres Ethnological Interest Zone, also included in the register of Béns Culturals d’Interès Nacional (BCIN).
