1. Jafra

Pueblos fantasmas Cataluña

Jafra is one of the abandoned villages of Catalonia that has more history and legend behind it.

This village, located near the Garraf region, just half an hour from Barcelona airport, dates from the twelfth century, preserves the ruins of some of its most important buildings and has been abandoned since the sixties. Its popularity lies, in addition to several lurid legends, in the strange voices and psychophonies that for years have been heard inside the cemetery, confirmed by experts in parapsychology.

One of the terrifying legends begins with the arrival of a wealthy Austrian family in one of the village’s farmhouses. The family had three children with serious health problems whom they decided to confine at home. When the fourth daughter arrived, the mother died in childbirth and from then on strange things began to happen. The other children gradually died and the fourth child died when she fell into a well inside the cemetery while fleeing from her father.

Since this event, it is said that many have seen the spectral image of the little girl, running around the ruins of the cemetery or along some sections of the Garraf curves, that her wailing can be heard and even that there are several psychophonies in the area.

Apart from the legend of the little girl, the town has a haunted house, another place frequented by travelers who are passionate about paranormal phenomena. The legends are increasing and it has also been said that apart from thermogenesis (sudden and inexplicable temperature changes), UFOs have also been seen. Undoubtedly, Jafra is one of the most enchanted places in Barcelona.

2. Selma

Pueblos fantasmas Cataluña

The historical vestiges of this abandoned village of Catalonia in the Alt Camp region are millenary and for more than 200 years it was administered by the Order of the Temple.

This town, located in Baix Penedès, has been uninhabited since the beginning of the 20th century. Since then, it has become an obligatory stop for lovers of hiking and horror movies and is one of the scariest places in Catalonia.

For a long time there has been talk of bad luck that haunted the inhabitants of the place, especially during the reign of Pedro IV of Aragon as he fell into debt. Later, they suffered a drought and when they recovered they were progressively attacked by vandalism and during the War of Succession multiple people were shot.

Selma is a perfect area for hiking routes in Catalonia, especially for those who also want to feel the magic of an enchanted village and one of the best abandoned places in Catalonia.

3. Marmellar

Pueblos fantasmas Cataluña

Even more lurid is the case of this town located in the municipality of Montmell, in the Baix Penedès region, as it is not only abandoned, but also really creepy events took place at the end of the last century in this abandoned site in Tarragona.

The story goes that Marmellar witnessed a truly gruesome crime in which a young woman was raped, murdered and burned in one of the town’s dilapidated houses, in what appeared to be evidence of a satanic cult or black mass. In the house where Marmellar’s crime allegedly took place, a burnt mattress can still be seen, where the events supposedly took place, as well as a large amount of graffiti referring to evil.

According to police sources, several girls were subsequently murdered on the site and abandoned in the old cemetery, thus giving rise to a reputation as a cursed village, which possibly led to its isolation. In the same community is also the medieval village of Montpaó, whose first references date back to the eleventh century. There are several houses that remain in perfect condition and can be visited without major problems. You can’t miss this spooky abandoned village in Tarragona!

4.La Mussara

Pueblos fantasmas Cataluña

Located in the heart of the province of Tarragona, in the Baix Camp region, La Mussara has been abandoned since 1956. It was the moment of the beginning of a new history for this town, that of becoming one of the most terrifying abandoned villages in Catalonia and one of the best ghost towns in Tarragona.

Since then this small abandoned village in Catalonia is the protagonist of all kinds of stories and legends, from psychophonies to an enchanted forest or all kinds of theories about the dense fog that always covers the village. All of them are based on a real fact: La Mussara is another example of rural exodus. Apparently, in 1950, an epidemic of phylloxera in the vineyards, together with a severe drought and the lack of economic opportunities in the area, caused it to become empty.

Famous for its scenic beauty and the mysteries that surround it, of the town we can only see the ruins of a few houses and a church, inside which remain remnants of ancient rituals. A few meters from this small ghost town we will find a hamlet, next to which it is said that there is a large stone and that anyone who passes it, will end up in the Villa del Seis, a sinister place in another dimension. Until the 1990s, mysterious disappearances and leaps in time took place in this place that are still unexplained today. You have to visit this ghost town in Tarragona!

5. Vallgorgina

Pueblos fantasmas Cataluña

Belonging to the province of Barcelona and located in the Vallés Oriental region, Vallgorguina is another of those enchanted places in Barcelona that you have to visit.

The town is a place rich in legends of witches and covens. It is said that the witches came from everywhere, flying on their brooms to their famous stone dolmen, where they performed their covens, which concluded with copulation with a goat. To scare them away, the peasants recited psalms and made incense, but instead of frightening them, they only made them angrier, so the witches punished the place with terrifying storms.

It is also said that the church bells rang when the witches passed over the town, in the direction of the dolmen, to protect its people. Very close to this megalithic monument is the church of Santa Maria de Tapioles, a place desecrated a thousand times by the “ritualists”. The church is currently closed and has been partially restored.
