Private tour of the Sagrada FamĂlia: exterior, facades and interior with an official guide

The Sagrada FamĂlia is the only building in the world that has been under construction for more than 140 years, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005, and the most visited landmark in Spain. GaudĂ died in 1926, having built only one of the eighteen planned towers — that of the St. Barnabas bell tower, on the Nativity Facade. What you see today is the sum of six generations of architects — from DomĂšnec Sugrañes to Jordi FaulĂ, the current director of the project — who have interpreted his models, his sketches, and the plaster model fragments that survived the 1936 fire.

Today, the basilica is in its most advanced construction phase: in February 2026, coinciding with the centenary of GaudĂ’s death, the upper arm of the cross of the Tower of Jesus Christ was installed — the highest point of the complex, at 172.5 meters — culminating the exterior construction of the central tower. The completion of the entire complex is expected before 2030. This private guided tour exists so that this history does not get lost in the crowd.

During this exclusive 3-hour guided walk, your official tour guide — holding the TĂtol de Guia de Turisme de Catalunya issued by the Generalitat — will take you from the exterior approach along Carrer de Mallorca to the crypt where GaudĂ’s remains rest, passing by the two completed facades, the Romanesque apse, and the central nave. Each stop has a specific focus: the iconography of the portals of Charity, Faith, and Hope; the arborescent column system that GaudĂ drew from the morphology of trees; and the ruled geometry of the hyperboloids and paraboloids that allow light to enter, filtered and colored by Joan Vila Grau’s stained glass windows.

The tour includes the complete exterior and the interior of the basilica. Admission to the interior must be purchased separately on the official website — we will explain exactly when and how to do this upon confirming your booking. The bell towers are an optional access requiring an additional ticket; please contact us if you are interested in including them in the itinerary.

What we'll visit

Tour itinerary: streets, facades, and interior of the basilica

The tour begins outside, on Carrer de Mallorca, with a first reading of the complex from a distance — the only point from which the Nativity and Passion towers can be seen at the same time.

Nativity Facade (east orientation, Carrer Marina)

The only facade designed and directly supervised by GaudĂ, completed in 1930. Three portals dedicated to Faith, Hope, and Charity, with more than three hundred sculpted figures. The guide points out the tortoise supporting the left column and the Annunciation sculptural group.

Passion Facade (west-facing, Carrer de Sardenya)

Commissioned to Josep Maria Subirachs, inaugurated in 1987. A language radically opposed to that of the Nativity: straight lines, angular shapes, bare surfaces. The guide deciphers the magic square of order 4 inscribed in the stone.

Apse and ambulatory (north orientation)

The oldest part of the building, begun by Francesc de Paula del Villar in 1882. Here, the fracture between the original historicist Gothic and the structural naturalism that GaudĂ gradually imposed is visible.

Central nave and interior of the basilica

The space where GaudĂ’s ruled geometry reaches its highest expression. Arborescent columns that branch out into the vault like an oak forest. The stained-glass windows by Joan Vila Grau create a cycle of light that varies with the time of day.

Crypt and tomb of Antoni GaudĂ

In the Chapel of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, inside Villar’s original Neo-Gothic crypt, GaudĂ has been buried since June 12, 1926. The guide reconstructs his final weeks and the massive funeral that paralyzed all of Barcelona.

Glory Façade (south-facing, under construction)

The main facade according to GaudĂ’s project: the most monumental of the four, designed to represent the Creed and the Beatitudes. It is viewed from the outside while the guide explains the eighteen planned towers.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions about the private tour of the Sagrada FamĂlia

How do I buy tickets to the Sagrada FamĂlia, how much do they cost, and when should I buy them?

Tickets are purchased directly on sagradafamilia.org. When selecting the date, choose the same time slot as your tour (10:30 or 16:30) so that access to the interior coincides with the guided tour. Adults from €26 (low season) to €35+ (high season). Children under 11: free admission.

How much do bell towers cost and how do you buy them?

Access to the towers is a separate ticket that is also purchased at sagradafamilia.org. There are two options: towers of the Nativity Facade and towers of the Passion Facade. The price ranges between €15 and €22 extra per person, depending on the season.

Is this tour suitable for families with young children?

Yes, and it is one of the guided tours that works best with children from 6–7 years old. The Sagrada Família has an immediate visual impact. The guide naturally adjusts the vocabulary and stories to the group. Children under 12 do not pay admission to the inside of the temple.

When is it better to visit the Sagrada Família — in the morning or in the afternoon?

It depends on what you want to see. In the morning, the light enters through the stained-glass windows of the Nativity Facade and illuminates the interior in warm tones. In the afternoon, the light shines through the Passion Facade and bathes the nave in blues and greens. The afternoon session offers the most chromatically spectacular interior.

What other GaudĂ and Modernisme tours do you recommend alongside this one?

If you are interested in GaudĂ in depth, the Private Tour of Antoni GaudĂ’s Modernism covers Casa BatllĂł, Casa MilĂ , and Passeig de GrĂ cia. We also offer the Private Tour of the Life and Work of Antoni GaudĂ, which connects the architect’s biography with each of his works.

Are there long lines at the Sagrada FamĂlia? How can you avoid them?

La Sagrada Família is the most visited monument in Spain and queues can exceed an hour in high season. When you book this tour, we will send you instructions to buy your ticket in advance — you enter directly with your guide, skipping the ticket office queue.

Is the tour suitable for people with reduced mobility?

The exterior and the main indoor areas are accessible. Some sections of the indoor route have stairs with no alternative ramp. If anyone in the group uses a wheelchair, please let us know when booking: the guide will adapt the route without missing the essential highlights.

How far in advance should I book the tour?

We recommend a minimum of 7 days’ notice. We need this lead time to assign you a guide specialized in Modernist architecture who matches your language, date, and time slot. During peak season, please book two to three weeks in advance.

The private tour was 100% worth it. We are a family of 5 and the guide adapted the entire experience so our children were involved. No audio guides, real conversation.
