About this tour

The Dog Tour: the only private tour in Barcelona designed to go with your dog

Barcelona has one of the highest dog densities per capita in Europe: the municipal census exceeds 175,000 registered dogs. The city has adapted to this reality unevenly — there are areas in the center where animals are normally tolerated and others where tourist pressure and municipal ordinances make coexistence more complicated. This private guided itinerary exists to navigate this reality wisely and explore the city with your dog.

The Dog Tour is the only private tour in Barcelona designed specifically for those traveling with their dog — there is no other. The route is not a scaled-down version of another tour where dogs are “allowed”: the itinerary is designed around the spaces, schedules, and access rules that make the experience work just as well for humans as it does for animals. Three hours on foot through the Gothic Quarter, El Raval, Poble Sec, and Montjuïc — neighborhoods with an open urban layout, shaded squares, and very few crowded stretches.

The tour is led by an official tour guide who knows Barcelona’s historical relationship with pets — from the bird markets of Carrer Comtal to the 1850 ordinances that first regulated dog ownership in the city — and who adapts the pace, stops, and duration in each area based on how the pet and the group respond at any given moment. The dog does not need to be of a specific breed or size. However, they must be kept on a leash during the tour.

What we'll visit

Itinerary: the route passes through the Gothic Quarter, El Raval, and Poble Sec

The tour begins at Plaça de l’Àngel and continues through the Gothic Quarter, El Raval, Poble Sec, and Montjuïc:

Plaça de l'Àngel and the Gothic Quarter

Plaça de l’Àngel is the ancient main gateway to Roman Barcino, the point where the city’s two main thoroughfares crossed the city walls since the 1st century AD. It is also the natural starting point for the Gothic Quarter: a neighborhood of narrow medieval alleys, with much less vehicular traffic than the tourist hub of Jaume I, where getting around with a dog is remarkably more comfortable. The route passes through quiet little squares like Plaça de Sant Felip Neri — one of the neighborhood’s most secluded and peaceful spots, with trees and benches — or Plaça del Rei, the former heart of the medieval power of the Crown of Aragon, surrounded by a Gothic palace and featuring traffic-free stone paving.

El Raval

El Raval is the densest and most transformed neighborhood in the old town: working-class in the 19th century, marginalized for much of the 20th, and undergoing a process of cultural regeneration since the 1990s. Plaça de Vicenç Martorell — one of the quietest and most tree-lined squares in the neighborhood — is the first open space on the route through El Raval, a popular meeting point for locals with dogs, with outdoor terraces that welcome them. Further along, Plaça dels Àngels and the area surrounding the MACBA (Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art, Richard Meier, 1995): one of the largest and most open spaces in the old town. Since January 2025, the square has been partially affected by the museum’s expansion works — a new building at the Convent dels Àngels, which is expected to be completed in early 2027. Despite the construction work, the area remains accessible and the MACBA remains open.

Poble Sec

The neighborhood that grew at the foot of the mountain from the second half of the 19th century, inhabited by working-class families from all over Spain — its streets are named after Spanish cities as a reminder of that origin. It is a neighborhood of narrow, sloping streets, with very little vehicular traffic and a genuine neighborhood feel, free from the tourist pressure of the old town.

Montjuïc

The mountain overlooking the port of Barcelona from its 173 meters is one of the most interesting areas of the route to visit with a dog: gardens, outdoor paths, viewpoints with views over the city and the sea, and designated areas where animals can move more freely. The guide will take you through the outdoor spaces of Montjuïc and will point out the areas where regulations allow you to let your dog off the leash.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions about The Dog Tour

What dog breeds and sizes are welcome?

All of them. The tour is designed to work with any breed and size. The only requirement is that the dog must be kept on a leash throughout the tour — out of respect for public spaces and other pedestrians. If your dog requires a muzzle by municipal ordinance (breeds considered potentially dangerous under Royal Decree 287/2002), they must wear it. Please let us know the breed when booking if you have any questions about how the regulations apply to the tour.

Where to grab a drink with my dog in Barcelona? Dog-friendly terraces and bars along the route

In Barcelona, you can have a drink with your dog on most outdoor terraces unless the establishment expressly indicates otherwise. El Raval has the highest density of this type of establishment in the old town. Several points along the route or in the immediate vicinity are particularly convenient for taking a break with your dog:

Plaça de Vicenç Martorell (Raval) — a quiet, tree-lined square with outdoor terraces around its entire perimeter, a popular meeting spot for local dog owners. Terraza del bar del CCCB (Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona, Carrer Montalegre) — the cultural center’s outdoor terrace, open to the public, dog-friendly, and right in the heart of El Raval. Bar Lobo (Carrer del Pintor Fortuny

Are there areas where dogs can be off-leash during the route?

Yes. On the slopes of Montjuïc corresponding to the Poble Sec section, there are areas designated by the Barcelona City Council where dogs can walk off-leash. The guide will let you know which ones are and which ones are not, based on current regulations. Throughout the rest of the route —Gothic, Raval, Eixample— the animal must be kept on a leash.

Does the route pass through crowded areas? Is it suitable for nervous dogs?

The itinerary is designed to avoid the busiest tourist areas in the city center. Las Ramblas, La Boqueria, or La Barceloneta are not part of the route. The Gothic Quarter visited on this tour covers the quieter streets of the neighborhood, with less foot traffic than the Jaume I–Catedral axis. El Raval is explored through its quieter northern part. Even so, the center of Barcelona is a lively city with noise, traffic, and people. If your dog reacts strongly to urban stimuli, please contact us before booking and we will guide you.

Are there fountains or areas where the dog can drink water during the tour?

Yes, the tour passes by several public drinking fountains. In summer, we recommend bringing a collapsible container —the guide knows where the most accessible fountains on the route are. Barcelona City Council has a network of more than 1,600 public drinking fountains in the city; those in the Gothic Quarter and Passeig de Sant Joan are a regular part of the tour.

What are the best hours in summer to avoid the heat?

The 10:00 AM session. In June, July, and August, mid-afternoon temperatures can exceed 30°C in unshaded areas of the route. The morning is significantly cooler. During the low season (October–April), both time slots are equally comfortable.

Can I do this tour if, in addition to the dog, I am bringing small children?

Yes, and it’s a combination that works well. The route is flat, with no stairs or difficult sections, and the pace is set by the guide based on the group. Children under 12 are free. Please let us know the ages of the children and the dog’s breed when booking.

We took Max, our golden, and it was the best decision of the trip. The guide knew every fountain and every corner where the dog could move around comfortably. The Poble Sec part was a total surprise.

Viajamos a todas partes con nuestro bulldog francés y este fue, sin duda, el mejor tour apto para perros que hemos hecho jamás. El guía nos llevó por zonas del Barrio Gótico que nunca habríamos encontrado solos.

I had never taken a tour with my dog, I always thought it would be complicated. The tour of El Raval was fascinating and Nala was perfectly fine the whole time. We'll definitely do it again.

Nuestro guía fue increíble: la historia del Raval y la historia detrás de la Plaça de Sant Felip Neri nos fascinaron. Y a nuestro perro Biscuit le encantaron los espacios abiertos de Montjuïc. Una experiencia única.
