Route from Santuari de la fontcalda to Cota 705 (Punta Alta)

Pinell de Bray is part of the Terra Alta region. This striking village is located on the top of a hill, so from here you can see a large part of the territory. It is also home to the Cavallas and Pàndols mountain ranges and in this beautiful village also flows the Canaletes river, one of the most important rivers in Catalonia.

In this Willy’s plan we are going to Terres del Ebre, in Tarragona. In this route from Santuari fontcalda to Cota 705 we will visit an area with a lot of history, which represents the aftermath of the Spanish civil war and the historical influence that marked a before and after for Catalonia Do you feel like doing a local route to know some of these sites? The Santuari Fontcalda is located next to the famous Fontcalda spa. Although this tourist activity is currently closed to the public, right next to it, we find a 100% natural hot water pool, with a charming itinerary along the river. Here we will spend most of the morning refreshing and recharging ourselves with a bit of nature.

The second stop will be at the Ermita Santa María Magdalena. Although it can only be accessed eventually, we have a picnic area right next door with barbecues to stop for lunch and take a break on our route.

Finally, we arrived at the Punta Alta viewpoint (you will find it on google maps as “Monumento a la paz”). There we will be able to enjoy incredible views, as well as relive the Spanish Civil War and the Battle of the Biberón. In this site we can also access free of charge to the 2 caves where the republicans hid from Franco’s bombing during the war and which are still in very good condition.

This chapel is located in an incredible place in Tierra Alta, near the fontcalda spa and is undoubtedly a very important event for the surrounding populations.

The Fontcalda Sanctuary is not alone. This site is composed of a group of buildings with a very modern baroque style documented in the nineteenth century and today houses a hiking center very important for tourism in the area. Although the visit to the sanctuary is private, it is worth taking a look at the panoramic views of the place and let yourself be carried away by the beautiful landscapes it offers. That is why we could not pass unnoticed to this place that you will undoubtedly love.

Santa María Magdalena Chapel

The Santa Maria Magdalena Hermitage is located in the same municipality of Terrades and is one of the must-see sites on a visit to this place. This small church dates back to the XIV century under the name of Santa Maria del Codó, a name it received from the ancient mountain and it was until its reconstruction in the XV century when it was taken more into account as a sanctuary of the village.

Today you can only see ruins, but this ancient Romanesque church still breathes tranquility and peace all around. Therefore, it is a place that attracts many parishioners and tourists. In addition, the views are beautiful and allow us to see much of the town. Ideal to take a break and continue with our route.

And last but not least, we arrive at Punta Alta . According to the war diary, this place houses the remains of what was a great struggle during the Spanish Civil War. Not only does it represent the history that marks a before and after for an entire country, but it is a monument to peace that pays reverence to all the soldiers and patriots who fought for a new dawn.

A place that served as a refuge for many soldiers and that today is a must to visit if you are near Terrades . In addition you can not leave without seeing the views of this place and take a good picture for the memory. Undoubtedly a place to be marked forever in the heart of Catalonia.
