Bellver Castle

The Castell de Bellver is an interpretation of the Catalan phrase “Bonitas vistas” (beautiful views) and no wonder. Surrounded by pine trees and scented by beautiful forests high above Palma de Mallorca, the panoramic views from this place are spectacular. Thus, from the top of this fascinating circular construction, we can see the entire bay of Palma and the Tramuntana mountains.

If we go to the history of this place, we must talk about the uniqueness of the Gothic-Catalan design of this castle, as it is the only one in Spain that contains these features, being built in the fourteenth century as a defense tower at the time of the conquest. In addition, it has been for centuries the summer residence of royalty, passing also as a prison, and finally today a museum which you can visit and climb to the top of the fortress.

To this day, the castle remains intact and is used as a venue for events and concerts: in summer it is an incredible patio to enjoy the sun and the view. In addition, one of the most important museums in Spain is located here. Here you can learn about the different historical places of the island and the importance of the Arab and Roman cultures for the Mallorcan culture.

Sant Joan Gastronomic Market

mercado sant joan

The most romantic place of our route is the gastronomic market of Sant Joan, as it is the perfect place for lovers of Spanish and international cuisine. The market is open from Monday to Sunday with very flexible hours for tourists. For more information click here. In this place, we can stop for tapas throughout the afternoon, while we disconnect and relax a little. The atmosphere is super nice, besides being a characteristic space for its style and decoration.

This beautiful 20th century modernist building was designed by Bennàzar in the shape of a cross with lateral arms for greater amplitude. The market also has 300 meters of incredible terraces ideal for enjoying a romantic evening as a couple, an afternoon of tapas and vermouth with friends, or a nice family meal.

Mallorca Cathedral

If there is a must-see in Mallorca, this is it. is its cathedral and perhaps the first thing that comes to mind when we talk about this destination. The Cathedral of Mallorca, is simply majestic and considered one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in the world.

From its history we know that when James I reconquered the island in the fourteenth century, he found a grandiose mosque that was immediately converted into a church in honor of the Virgin Mary and as a pantheon for the kings of Spain. However, its construction did not end here, but a few centuries later great figures such as Gaudí and Miquel Barceló passed through it, until it became the spectacular cathedral it is today.

If you are in this place, do not forget to enter the chapter museum: a place that gathers the best religious exponents of Gothic and Baroque style found in the church and preserved in its best condition.

As we mentioned before, the entrance to the cathedral is free every Sunday, that’s why we proposed this day for our route. The most important thing is to check the schedules so as not to miss the opportunity to visit one of the most spectacular churches in the world.
