For some, it is a strategic place, where the ancient ruins of the former village of Som are located, for others a valuable cultural legacy, which is reflected in the ruins of what was once an imposing castle.

The Coll de Som Castle was built in the 19th century and is now in ruins. It became a narrow and small enclosure, full of half-finished walls and narrow loopholes. However, many curious people choose to climb up to it by hiking routes, and take an unforgettable memory of the valley of the Ebro river and the mountains in the area.

As the path is not very busy, the arrival to the castle is somewhat dangerous, so we will probably encounter a slippery stone or two. This is a great challenge for many hikers who increasingly come to this place.

From the history of the castle we can emphasize that this popular work of architecture of the 19th century was a strategic point to see the old town. It was an ideal point for defense during the Carlist wars and even the civil war of the twentieth century.

Not for being in ruins it is not less valuable, take a look at the ruins of the Castell de Coll de Som and let your imagination run wild. Idealizing what was once a great Catalan fortress.

Town of Miravet

Miravet is one of the most recommendable destinations if you are looking for routes and excursions in Tarragona. Only about two hours away, you will find a charming medieval village, right at the foot of the Ebro.

If there’s one thing you can’t miss at Miravet, is the visit to its charming villa. Like something out of a fairy tale. This architectural ensemble offers a very picturesque and medieval stamp, facing the Ebro River.

The first thing we advise you to do is to go up to Miravet Castle. It is undoubtedly visible from afar, making it irresistible to the eyes of any tourist. From this improvised balcony you can see a large part of the Ebro River, as well as contemplate the surrounding fields. Although this building is in ruins, it is the stories of the Templars battling during the Carlist Wars and the Battle of the Ebro that stand out the most in your visit.

Last but not least, take the time to stroll around the farmhouse, heading towards the village church. During the tour you will notice the architectural changes that were composing the town and the Muslim influence in some of its buildings. Something unexpected when we talk about a typical medieval village.

Punta de les Talàies

Our third and last stop is a natural viewpoint, where we can appreciate an incredible sunset: Punta de les Talàies, in the village of Rasquera. The perfect place to rest from our excursion and enjoy one of the most emblematic sunsets overlooking this charming village.

Although the road is signposted, we recommend you to be cautious when arriving at this place, first of all, if you are going to make a weekend getaway with children. Being a steep and rocky place, it is best to take precautions. However, this is not a problem, since access is easy and the reward upon arrival is very gratifying.

If we follow this same path and venture a little further, we will find the hermitage of Santo Domingo and the observatory of Lister. Two important places for the town of Rasquera, which although not preserved in the best condition, are a clear example of what these works once meant for its population.
